About this project
In October 2026, we travelled to Finland again. This time, we wanted to explore Lapland outside the snowy winter season and experience the last part of autumn. Instead of a landscape covered in snow, we found vast forests, lakes, untouched nature and the final colours of the season.
Our apartment at Lapin Kutsu Apartments in Saariselkä was a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Many places were easy to reach from there, including the Aurora Trail and the Kaunispää observatory, which we could even walk to. We went hiking, tried fatbiking and booked a day trip with Lapland Safaris in Saariselkä. Of course, we also spent some time exploring the village itself.
The main reason for our trip, however, was chasing the Northern Lights. We kept looking for clear skies and were willing to cover quite a few kilometres to find them. Sometimes we spent up to five hours driving, trying to get away from the clouds and find a suitable location to watch and photograph the Aurora Borealis.
One of the highlights was the unfrozen lakes. Their calm surfaces allowed us to capture the Northern Lights not only in the sky but also reflected in the water. Moments like these are what make photographing the aurora in Finland so special to me.
This photo and video collection features different locations across Finnish Lapland. These include photographs from Muonio at Muoniontie 79, Kaunispää and Huipulla, as well as the lakes Särkijärvi, Ilmakkijärvi, Ahvenjärvi and Kattajärvi in the Saariselkä and Inari area.
This project offers a few glimpses of a beautiful time of year in Finland, with autumn landscapes, untouched nature and Northern Lights above the lakes. The collection is still growing, and more photographs and videos from this trip will be added over time.
